Oil Spill Woes
I have recently been watching the oil spill and the information coming out of the spill. I am sad to say that the company BP who is performing the “cleanup” of the spill is getting over there heads. I have a serious problem with this, because it is the peoples’ ocean and to leave a clean-up to a unprepared company is going to be devastating.
Reports have shown that we are just feeling the affects of the spill along the Gulf Coast and I can’t even imagine the type of destruction that is occurring in the ocean right now. I am even comparing this spill to the worst environmental disaster since Chernobyl.
I don’t even think we can comprehend the repercussions of this type of spill yet. Soon we are going to have to watch where things come from, what water is being filtered from where, seafood being caught where, and I feel sadden for anyone who actually lives along the Gulf coast from getting sick.
Oil is not something to be taken lightly and not something that just dissolves in the water. It is oxygen crazed and basically an animal and plant killer. That is why disposing oil from our cars is such a big deal.
Which leads to the next problem I fear from their removal process is the chemical they are injecting into the water environment. Not only do we not know the affects of the chemical in the environment, it disperses the oil so you can’t see it. So now we are going to have oil in water that we cannot see making this spill even more dangerous. Remembering back in high school, dispersing oil increases the surface area, therefore contaminating more of the environment. Injecting a dispersant into a major oil spill just blows my mind away, stating this is a reliable method of cleanup.
This has to turn into a people matter and let real experts to decide on the best course of action. Obviously it looks like you don’t know what to do and need people from all sides in aiding the cleanup and blocking more oil from coming out. Just let it go because covering it up is looking worse and worse for you.
